Book Recommendation…for the pastor’s encouragement

Christian biography is one of the most useful tools for Christians to seek encouragement throughout the difficulties of life.  However, not everyone is motivated to read a 500 page biography of a celebrated saint, regardless if it is deemed the definitive work.  Because of this, John Piper has done another of his many great services to the church by publishing this biographical series known as The Swans are not Silent.  In this series, Piper takes those most celebrated throughout church history and forms a succinct, but thorough biographical sketch of three faithful Christian leaders in one book, each of which are less than 200 pages.  The first one I would like to recommend to you is The Hidden Smile of God, which highlights the lives of John Bunyan, William Cowper, and David Brainerd and is written to encourage the faint hearted Christian who has suffered greatly in life and seeks to be reminded that, “Behind a frowning providence, He hides a smiling face.” (Hymn – God Moves in Mysterious Ways)

I would start with this one and move to the others.  They are all easy, quick reads and possess the passionate convictions many of us have grown to love about John Piper.  You can find it on sale here.

I just finished this book Monday! It was refreshment to this dry soul. I recommend starting with this one as well. I have read others in the series and Hidden Smile has ministered to my heart sweetly but deeply. Thank God Piper has reminded us of the glory of His grace through the seemingly broken lives of three of His servants. I do enjoy your posts! Thank you.
