I must confess, I have not read all of this book: Southern Baptists, Evangelicals, and the Future of Denominationalism. You may be wondering then why I am recommending it to you. It is because of the chapter I was asked to read that Ray Van Neste wrote about the pastor’s calling to care for souls. Ray’s chapter is so good and helpful, it is worth the cost of the entire book! His 30 page chapter is maybe the most clear and concise treatment for it’s size of what a pastor is and is called to do that I think I have ever read. He uses a mixture of the main biblical texts and faithful examples from church history to make his case. You cannot read this chapter and miss what the Chief Shepherd expects from his appointed shepherds. Although I have not read all the chapters, there is an all-star cast that has been assembled to write them. Every pastor needs to read Ray’s chapter in this book and be reminded afresh of the glorious work God has called the pastor to do.
