Book Recommendation…for the pastor’s encouragement

Arguably, one of the most precious gifts you can give a young pastor, are the wise words of an older seasoned pastor delivered in such a way that a young pastor can understand.  You will find such a gem in this book, Wise Counsel.  This book is a compilation of the letters of pastor, John Newton written to his friend and younger pastor, John Ryland Jr. for the purpose to share his “Wise Counsel” with him.  Whether you are a young, aspiring pastor or a seasoned one, this book is a wealth of timeless counsel that any pastor seeking to be more faithful would benefit.  This book is a must read for all pastors.

Read an excellent review of the book by my dear friend, Jeremy Walker.

I would also ask for your prayers as I experienced a great loss in my life this week.  My dear friend and pastoral mentor, Jackson Boyett and his beloved wife, Barbara were killed on Tuesday evening in a car wreck.  Pray for me, but especially pray for the congregation of Dayspring Fellowship in Austin, TX who have suddenly lost their beloved, faithful shepherd of 33 years.  I intend to write a tribute to Jackson for my Monday morning post and some of the invaluable, “Wise counsel” I received from him for the last several years.  Thanks for praying!

Here is the new report documenting the event and the story about the Boyetts.
