When this question is asked today, many qualities would most certainly be listed as essential, depending upon who answers. Great oratory skills, a winsome personality, abilities to lead to name a few. Yet, I believe one essential quality that every pastor must possess is the same quality Charles Spurgeon said was essential in his day:
Whatever “call” a man may pretend to have, if he has not been called to holiness, he certainly has not been called to the ministry.
Godliness through a pastor’s tenacious walk with God is an essential quality that every pastor must possess and must be the central focus of his life. So often amidst the pressures and demands of ministry, this effort is squeezed out of his focus, his affections, and his pursuits.
Pastors, as you set you hand to the plow this week in this fine work, make sure your chief pursuit is to walk with God. This is essential not just for your fruitfulness and faithfulness in the ministry, but your enjoyment as you do it.
