Book Recommendation…for the pastor’s study

I want to expose you to a set of excellent commentaries you might be unfamiliar with, as I was until recently.  I stumbled upon the 2 Samuel Commentary of Dale Ralph Davis earlier this year just before I started preaching 2 Samuel.  Dale Ralph Davis is the pastor of Woodland Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.  After reading most of 2 Samuel from Davis, he has become one of my favorite commentary writers and has a tremendous gift to capture the point of the text with clarity and precision.  One more thing that has made me love this series.  He is incredibly winsome and funny throughout.  Several times I have been amazed at how much I find myself just enjoying reading his work.  It is informative about the text, but is also a fun read (never thought I’d say that about a commentary).  You would be helped to get any of his commentaries or other writings.  Here are the different books of the Bible Davis has written on and I strongly commend them to you for either sermon prep or simple interaction with the text.  Just click on the book of the Bible and it will take you to a good price for it.

  1. Gary Ware says:

Ralph Davis also has a commentary on Micah in the Evangelical Press Study Commentary series.
    Excellent material.
I believe he has retired from the Woodland pastorate, and the wonderful collection of audio recordings of his sermons there appears to be gone.

  2. Dan Sudfeld says:

I would also commend Davis’s book on how to preach Old Testament narrative. I believe its called, “The Word Became Fresh.”

  3. Peter says:

I have started a study on judges and I have heard a lot of good things about Dale Ralph Davis! I believe he is known for his sound Commentaries, tied in with a good sense of humor!
